Campaign Spokespersons Leonor Varela and Dave Rastovich lead huge Anti-whaling Rally on the Eve of the 2008 Meeting of the International Whaling Commission in Santiago Chile.
Santiago, Chile (June 23, 2008) Over a thousand people gathered at Santaigo's Parque O'Higgins to attend a "SAVE THE WHALES AGAIN!" Campaign anti-whaling rally while becoming part of a unique ‘aerial art' image to bring attention to the plight of the smallest of the great whales, the Minke whale. Minke whales are the main target of Japanese, Norwegian, and Icelandic harpoons with nearly 23,000 killed since the so-called whaling moratorium went into effect.
Campaign Board-member and world renoun artist John Quigley of Spectral Q brought a unique design of a minke whale sketched by internationally renown Chilean Artist Francisco Letelier to life in a massive whale with the message “santuario” that measured over 300 feet long. The crowd listened and cheered as Chilean actress Leonora Varela who told them that there is no place for whaling in the 21st Century and that the world's oceans should be declared a global whale sanctuary.
Also participating in the press conference were professional surfer Dave Rastovich, and his wife Hannah Fraser from Surfers For Cetaceans. Dave spoke about the need to protect small cetaceans with whom he, as a surfer, often times shares the same coastal waters while Hannah, who accompanied Dave and Hayden Panettiere along with a small group of surfers to Taiji last year to intercept the annual dolphin slaughters, spoke about her experience there and the brutal slaughter that she witnessed. The group unveiled an impressive visual petition featuring photographs of thousands of people from all over the world who want to see whaling stopped now! ![]() Campaign Founder Jeff Pantukoff emphatically closed the event by making a statement on behalf of Hayden Panettiere, “Our campaign is leading a growing international movement to end whaling now! There is no way to humanely kill a dolphin or whale. Its time to end this cruel and barbaric industry forever. Its time to Save the Whales Again!”
